Shotgun Scenario Review: Operation ABSOLUTE RARITY

Welcome back to another shotgun scenario review. This entry in this series is about Operation ABSOLUTE RARITY, submitted by Agent Obtuse to the 2019 shotgun contest. In this scenario the Agents have to stop someone from publishing the Necronomicon online after a successful crowdfunding campaign.

The Necronomicon, as depicted in Evil Dead

It turns out that the person who is trying to sell the Necronomicon is just a Miskatonic student trying to make some money. The Agents have to find this student and exchange his digital copy for a fake. In the second part of the scenario the Agents have to track down the original Necronomicon, because as it turns out the original belonged to a now deceased millionaire.

The scenario gives several options for complications:

  • a nosy journalist
  • a bunch of wannabe wizards that are also interested in the Necronomicon
  • the not-so-dead millionaire, who wants his book back
  • an Outlaw cell that wants to get the tome before the Program can get his hands on it (or a Program team, if the Agents are Outlaws)

I am a fan of giving the Handler options in a scenario, so that they can customize it to their tastes. In this case I am most interested in the journalist option, as well as the undead millionaire. The journalist is well fleshed-out and choosing this option can make the scenario almost wholly mundane, if it weren't for the Necronomicon.

I wish the millionaire option had the same level of detail, for Handlers that want to increase the Unnatural in this scenario. For my run I decided that the undead wizard switched bodies with his nephew in the moment of his death and is now searching for his tome in an unfamiliar body.

Overall, this scenario's strong point is the fun premise. It is also a good way to give the Agents access to the legendary Necronomicon. Unfortunately, my players decided to burn it, rather than read it and get their minds blasted. :(
